Dillion Sheppard highlights importance of coaching education

Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach Dillon Sheppard says there’s no room for laziness when it comes to coaching education in the modern game, and stressed the importance of improving one’s knowledge of the game.

Sheppard was speaking in an exclusive interview with SABC Sport, having recently obtained his CAF A Licence ahead of the new PSL season.

The former speedy winger was also officially named the second assistant to incoming coach Fernando da Cruz earlier this week, and believes that the education ensures that coaches are not left behind in the game.

"The education process is so important you know, if you look back at my playing career over nineteen years, it is something that gives you more experience and it also increases your knowledge about the game.

"Our game is moving, and as soon as you stand still you will get left behind. It's also important to acquire the knowledge on how to develop young players and how to work at that senior level. I'm very happy to get my License."

Sheppard revealed that he achieved his latest badges through the Tanzania Football Federation following an invitation there.

Chiefs will also be competing in the CAF Confederation Cup in the 2026/27 season, which further served as motivation to push for the top qualification.

He does acknowledge that the journey to get here was not an easy one, and he even obtained his UEFA A Licence before his CAF one.

"I started with my SAFA D License while I was still playing in 2016, and then I got my CAF C license in 2017 which was the last year of my playing career. I then opted to go and do my UEFA License, started with UEFA C, built up with my UEFA B, and then my A License."

Sheppard enjoyed a full career with stints at Ajax Cape Town, Mamelodi Sundowns, Platinum Stars, Golden Arrows, and Bidvest Wits among others. He says proper development earlier in his life was the reason for his longevity, which is what he wants to pass on to the next generation of players.
