David Raya eyes big night as Arsenal chase history in Lisbon

David Raya has insisted Arsenal must embrace the moment as they prepare to face Sporting CP in Lisbon in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final clash tonight.

The Spanish goalkeeper made it clear that mindset would be key as Arsenal chased a place in back-to-back semi-finals for the first time in the club's history.

"I think we just have to focus on ourselves, enjoy every day, training and playing together," Raya said. "It's a massive opportunity."

Arsenal arrived in Portugal looking to respond after recent cup disappointments, but Raya remained calm about the bigger picture. "We are in a really, really good position, especially in the Premier League, and obviously we have an opportunity tonight to win," he added.

"The most important thing is to enjoy being together and enjoy being out there playing football. If you don't enjoy it, it's not worth it."

The Gunners travelled with confidence after a dominant 5-1 win in Lisbon last season, although Raya expected a very different test this time. He pointed to Sporting's strong home form and attacking style as major challenges.

"We know it's going to be very, very tough," he said. "Sporting's record at home is really, really good. We expect a big battle - two teams that want the ball and want to attack."

Raya also highlighted the added motivation for Viktor Gyokeres, who previously starred in Lisbon. "Going back to your old club gives you that extra motivation," he said. "He'll want to play and score goals, so let's hope he can score a few."

Since arriving from Brentford in 2023, Raya has become central to Arsenal's style under Mikel Arteta, combining defensive responsibility with build-up play.

"I am the last line of defence and the first line of attack," Raya explained. "We try to build from the back and create chances. I feel very confident playing this way and I really enjoy that responsibility to help the team win games."
