Danny Jordaan hits back at David Notoane's parting shot

SAFA President Danny Jordaan took issue with former South Africa U23 coach David Notoane's comments about factors that led to the team’s failure to qualify for the 2023 Africa U23 Cup of Nations.

The U23s were eliminated on the away-goal rule by Congo, after the two sides drew 1-1 in Soweto before playing to a scoreless stalemate in Brazzaville last month.

Notoane subsequently resigned during a live radio interview last week, citing working without a contract and administrative shortcomings as part of a contribution to the team’s demise.

"I don't know when he discovered that – after losing, or when. You see, one of the things that we don't do is criticise coaches, and we don't criticise players," responded Jordaan.

"And therefore it is important that a coach, when he has issues, must raise it there in the administration and they must deal with that. It makes no sense that you appoint a coach and they're not given support, it makes no sense."

The organisation around the team was shambolic, Notoane hardly had any camps nor playing quality opposition, but Jordaan pins that on player availability.

"But, as far as camps are concerned, as you know, under-23 players are actually playing full-time, either in the PSL or the NFD, so you cannot have camps as and when you want, you can only have it in the international break," he argued.

"That is something that we even asked FIFA, and CAF – don't put the under-23 fixtures in the same window as the senior team because there is an under-23 player like Cassius [Mailula], who could help that team.

"But now the coach also wants him in the senior team and then he may or may not play because it's the same window for both teams."
