Cristian Romero remains Tottenham captain despite discipline issues, says Thomas Frank

Romero was sent off during Tottenham's 2-0 defeat to Manchester United after a challenge on Casemiro, marking his second dismissal of the campaign. The Argentina centre-back will now serve a four-match domestic suspension, ruling him out until Spurs face Liverpool on 15 March.

Despite the incident, Frank has no plans to remove the captaincy. He described Romero as a developing leader whose passion benefits the team, but admitted the defender must learn from moments that cost the side.

The suspension arrives during a difficult period for Spurs, who are on a seven-match winless run in the Premier League. The slump has dropped them to 15th place, six points above the relegation zone, increasing pressure ahead of their clash with Newcastle United.

Frank admitted the team is "desperate" for victories and believes greater urgency and effort are needed to turn results around. He also suggested Tottenham could have taken something from the Manchester United match had they not been reduced to 10 men.

Injury concerns have further complicated matters, with defender Destiny Udogie expected to miss four to five weeks due to a hamstring injury. Meanwhile, uncertainty remains over Dejan Kulusevski's return from a long-term knee problem, with further medical assessments still required.

Frank remains confident Tottenham have the quality to recover, stressing the focus must remain on securing points and rebuilding momentum.
