Conway and Latham's disciplined batting put New Zealand in control against England

The visitors were powered by a remarkable opening partnership between Tom Latham and Devon Conway, who shared 317 runs and frustrated England's bowlers for most of the day. Their stand laid the perfect platform for New Zealand to take command of the contest in ideal batting conditions.

Latham led the way with a patient and disciplined 151 from 214 balls, while Conway played with greater freedom, striking 157 from 224 deliveries. The left-hander found the boundary regularly, hitting 22 fours and three sixes during a superb innings. Together, the pair combined patience with smart shot selection on a pitch that offered little assistance to England's attack.

England struggled to make inroads despite long spells in the field. Shoaib Bashir bowled 22 overs without reward, while Josh Tongue also worked hard but found little success.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 72nd over when captain Ben Stokes removed Latham after a marathon stay at the crease. England struck again moments later when Joe Root dismissed Conway with a cleverly flighted delivery, bringing an end to the outstanding opening stand.

New Zealand's middle order then added further runs before England enjoyed a brief late response. Henry Nicholls contributed 36 before being caught behind off Jofra Archer, while Rachin Ravindra fell for seven in the final over of the day, giving Gus Atkinson a wicket.

Despite those late setbacks, New Zealand remained in a commanding position at stumps. With experienced batters Daryl Mitchell and Tom Blundell still to come, the tourists will be confident of building a substantial first-innings total on Day Two.

England, meanwhile, will know they need early wickets if they are to prevent New Zealand from turning their strong start into a match-defining advantage. On a flat pitch and in hot conditions that continue to favour batting, the visitors hold the upper hand thanks to a masterclass from Conway and Latham.
