Club World Cup: Atletico Madrid bow out despite Antoine Griezmann winner as Botafogo advance

Atletico Madrid claimed a 1-0 win over Botafogo on Monday, but it wasn't enough to save their Club World Cup campaign as the Brazilian side advanced to the last 16 on goal difference.

Antoine Griezmann's late strike gave Diego Simeone's side a glimmer of hope in the closing moments at the Rose Bowl, but with Paris Saint-Germain defeating the Seattle Sounders 2-0 in the day's other Group B fixture, Atletico's exit was confirmed at the final whistle.

All three teams - PSG, Botafogo, and Atletico - finished level on six points, but the Spanish side's heavy 4-0 loss to PSG in their opener ultimately proved decisive.

Botafogo, South America's reigning champions, had already shocked the tournament with a 1-0 win over PSG and entered the final group match knowing even a narrow loss could see them through. That scenario played out perfectly for the Brazilians, who absorbed sustained pressure from Atletico and progressed thanks to a superior goal differential.

Despite the elimination, Atletico produced their strongest performance of the tournament, dictating much of the play after surviving an early scare. Venezuelan winger Jefferson Savarino forced a sharp save from Jan Oblak inside the opening minutes, but from there, Atletico began to take control.

Julian Alvarez nearly broke the deadlock in the 41st minute with a deflected effort, and just before halftime, the Argentine forward appeared to be fouled in the box. A VAR review, however, detected a prior infringement by Atletico, and the penalty claim was waved off.

As the second half wore on, Botafogo sat deeper, content to defend their favorable position in the standings. The best chance for the Brazilians came in the 67th minute, when Igor Jesus met Cuiabano's cross with a clean volley, only to be denied again by Oblak.

Atletico's breakthrough came late. In the 87th minute, Griezmann finished off a well-driven Alvarez cross with a composed finish, momentarily lifting hopes of qualification. But with time against them - and PSG holding firm in their match - Atletico's fate was sealed.

Botafogo advance from Group B alongside PSG, both with six points. Atletico, also on six, are eliminated on goal difference, a cruel outcome for a side that rallied too late in the tournament.
