Champions Sundowns held to goalless stalemate by 10-man Cape Town City

Champions Mamelodi Sundowns were frustrated as they were forced to settle for a goalless draw against 10-man Cape Town City at Loftus stadium on Tuesday.

The hosts wrapped up a sixth consecutive league title at the weekend with seven matches remaining when SuperSport United were held to a stalemate by Chippa United and the home supporters were in a party mood in Tshwane.

The Citizens, who had had Brice Ambina sent off in the 74th minute, however gave a solid display in what was often a fierce encounter.

The fixture started with the visitors giving Sundowns a guard of honour but the champions will only be presented with the trophy after their final game of the season against Maritzburg United on 20 May.

Coach Rulani Mokwena signaled his intent that Masandawana will not be resting on their laurels by naming a strong starting line-up.

The home team then dominated the first half with forwards Cassius Mailula and Peter Shalulile going close to opening the scoring.

The Cape side though created chances of their own with the possession that they had and forced home goalkeeper Ronwen Williams into a few saves.

Second-half substitute Ambina did not make things easier for his team as he received two yellow cards for reckless fouls on Themba Zwane and Aubrey Modiba.

Erik Tinkler's charges however showed they were up for the fight and held on to earn a well-deserved point from the contest.

With six league fixtures remaining, Sundowns (on 60 points, and who scan still reach a maximum of 78) can still break or equal the 75-point record for the old 18-team Premier Soccer League (PSL).

Cape Town City, meanwhile, remain fifth in the table after the stalemate.
