Chaine on breaking records, winning the league, and his World Cup dream

As Bafana Bafana report to their final camp today ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine says it’s every player’s dream to play in the ultimate football tournament, but he’s leaving everything to the man upstairs.

Speaking to the media shortly after winning the Betway Premiership title this past weekend in Mbombela, Chaine says that from his side, he’s done all he could to put himself in a good position to be considered for selection.

Chaine is one of the four goalkeepers in camp, who are vying for the three available spots to the World Cup...

"It's every player's dream to represent their country at the World Cup, and the most important thing for me was to control what I could and playing each game like it's my last for Orlando Pirates. What I could control is the amount of saves I had to make, the crosses I had to catch, and my communication to the players around me," explained Chaine.

It’s been a remarkable season for Chaine, setting a new record number of clean sheets in the league, with 21, beating the old record of 18 clean sheets by Ronwen Williams. The four clean sheets this month also saw him being voted as the May player of the month, and the league title seals what has been a season to remember for the lad from Bloemfontein.

Chaine’s success hasn’t come easily at Pirates, as he’s had to face a lot of criticism, but he never lost the plot and has always been focused on the main goal with the team and never individual glory.

When Chaine joined Pirates from Chippa United four years ago, he was brought in as a third-choice keeper, because of injuries to Richard Ofori at the time.

The 29-year-old’s story is a journey of resilience and breaking the barriers...

"Everyone has his story, everyone comes from somewhere, you just have to believe in God and what he's given you. You need to work as hard as you can when no one is watching, and the big stage will be there for everyone, so for you to maintain it you have to get better."
