Casemiro confirms decision to leave Man Utd at the end of the season

The decision brings to a close a four-year spell that began with a high-profile move from Real Madrid in August 2022 and delivered immediate silverware. Casemiro was a key figure in United's 2023 Carabao Cup triumph, scoring the opening goal in the final against Newcastle, and later helped the club reach consecutive FA Cup finals, lifting the trophy in 2024. In total, the 33-year-old has made 146 appearances and scored 21 goals in all competitions.

United held a one-year extension option in Casemiro's contract but chose against activating it as part of broader plans to reshape the midfield. The club's stance had been settled well before Thursday's announcement, with sources indicating that the midfielder's high wages made a renewal unlikely and that his exit will create greater financial flexibility ahead of the transfer window.

Casemiro, one of the senior figures in the squad, said the clarity over his future allows him to remain fully focused during the run-in, with four months still to play and major objectives ahead. He is also preparing for a busy international season with Brazil at the World Cup.

The midfielder's future has been a talking point since the arrival of new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who last year publicly suggested some players were "overpaid" and "not good enough". While Casemiro has remained a professional presence, sources suggest the player himself was keen to announce his departure early to avoid uncertainty.

Looking ahead, Casemiro is understood to be open to continuing his career in one of Europe's top five leagues, though he has also attracted interest from Saudi Arabia in recent windows. For United, his departure sharpens the focus on recruitment, with midfield reinforcements a priority as the club targets younger profiles such as Elliot Anderson, Adam Wharton and Carlos Baleba.
