Carling Cup break down of All Star team prize money

The Carling Black Label All Star team will share the R2-million prize money from this weekend’s win over Stellenbosch FC, the title sponsors have confirmed.

Speaking to the media after the match at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday, where goals from Mfundo Vilakazi and Ashley Du Preez secured a 2-1 victory for the side voted for by the fans, brand director Arne Rust explained the process.

The squad was coached by Jose Riveiro, also selected by the public.

"The way we are approaching the All-Star team is that there are 33 men in that squad, they split the winnings evenly. So, if they had lost they would have gotten R30 000 each and we would be paying that directly to each one of the players and the staff. So, it's not going to a club or to an intermidiary, it's going straight to the player or the member of staff," Rust said.

Carling divided opinion with their innovation when the tournament launched in October ahead of their inaugural Knockout Cup won by Stellies in December when they beat TS Galaxy in Durban.

The All Star team not only share the R2-million, but Rust revealed they will split the Fak’ iGoal Uzobona cheque – an amount of R870 000, awarded courtesy of Vilakazi’s third minute goal.

"So they each getting R60 000 for today and then they scored an R870 000 goal in the 3rd minute. That goes to the players and the staff. So, each one of the supporting staff, they split that money evenly. If there's 33 of them, so it's like a 3% cut. It works out about R25 000 each in edition to the R60 000," Rust added.

Rust also vouched for Polokwane as a future venue for cup finals, but continued to back the decision taken to stage the Carling Knockout Cup in Durban last month despite the crowd being relatively poor.

"I don't think that if we had announced it a bit it would have made a difference because the people of Polokwane are just so amazing. If there's a game, if there's a conversation I haven't had a single negative interaction in the whole week that I've been in Polokwane. Limpopo is this warm, vibrant heart that I don't think I've spent enough time in. The accomodation is great, the food is great, the beer is cold, I would recommend Limpopo as a destination."
