Cape Town City focused on play-offs amid SuperSport-Arrows ‘joke’

Cape Town City interim coach Diogo Peral says they have started preparing for the Premier Soccer League’s promotion and relegation play-offs despite still having a chance of finishing above 15th position.

City played to a tense goalless draw with neighbours Stellenbosch FC at Cape Town Stadium yesterday, and are currently 14th on the log – just one point above SuperSport United.

However, United still have to complete the second half of an earlier suspended match against Golden Arrows, but Peral has seemingly already accepted their fate.

"We're planning for the play-offs, watching the opposition we'll be coming up against and we've already travelled to watch some of their games, so the planning is well on the way already," confirmed Peral.

"If something else happens, then so be it – great, but we'll be at training... One day off and then the boys will be back at training [on Monday]."

Peral says it’s a joke that the last games of the season were not played simultaneously, and that the fate of the SuperSport-Arrows match, which was abandoned in February due to loadshedding, was not decided earlier.

"It's disappointing that it happens – I mean, the reason these games are all played at the same time is so that people and teams don't get to choose the result they want," he added.

"On top of that, it's the two teams that are fighting relegation that get to play each other, so it's a bit of a joke actually. [Ed's note: Arrows were also in the battle for survival before Saturday's matches, but their win over Sekhukhune United pushed them up to 12th.]

"It is what it is, and if we start with all the theories and negatives, it's not going to help us in the next game, the only thing we can do is what's in our hands, which is forget about all that and prepare as well as possible and put it all out there, and the rest takes care of itself."
