The alleged incident occurred around the 67th minute of Burnley's 2-0 victory over Leeds at Turf Moor on October 18. At that time, Mejbri, 22, was among the substitutes and warming up along the touchline. He later entered the match in the 83rd minute, receiving a yellow card for a late challenge on Leeds defender Gabriel Gudmundsson.
According to the FA, Mejbri is accused of acting "in breach of the Laws of the Game and/or in an improper manner and/or using abusive and/or indecent behaviour by spitting at or in the direction of Leeds United supporters." The Tunisian international has been given until Friday, November 28, to respond to the charge.
The incident reportedly came to light after a Leeds fan in the away section filed a complaint, prompting Lancashire Police to review the matter. While police confirmed they were aware of the complaint at the time, they have not issued any further comment since.
Neither Burnley nor Leeds have publicly responded to the FA's decision to bring charges.
Mejbri joined Burnley from Manchester United in August 2024 in a transfer deal that could rise to 9.4 million pounds. Since arriving at Turf Moor, he has made 50 appearances in all competitions, scoring once.
The charge adds to a turbulent start to Mejbri's spell with the Clarets, who currently find themselves battling to establish consistency in the top flight. The FA's disciplinary process will now determine whether further sanctions will follow for the midfielder.
