Broos embraces high stakes South Korea test with history on the line

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos says they are highly motivated to make history and reach the knockout phase of the FIFA World Cup for the first time tomorrow evening (Thursday morning in SA).

Speaking at the match-day minus one press conference, Broos says they’re eager to become the first South African men’s senior team to achieve this feat.

In South Africa’s three previous World Cup appearances, Bafana Bafana were eliminated from the group stage, but a win against South Korea would see them possibly finish second in the group….

"This will be a difficult game. We have to win and they need a draw to be in the next round. Our choice is more simple, we have to win and that's what we're going for."

Broos has also admitted that their poor start against the hosts Mexico, where they lost 1-0 in front of a capacity crowd at Estadio Azteca, was down to a lack of experience and believes that they have since recovered from that.

"We were a bit overwhelmed by the occasion in our first game because we are a team with a lack of experience in such games and that's why we didn't play how we wanted to play against Mexico. However, the game against Czechia was already much better, and now the motivation is even bigger."

As Broos looks ahead to South Korea, in what is also his last World Cup before he retires from coaching, he says qualification for the next round will be a good way to bow out.
