Breaking: Royal AM interdict halts crucial PSL meeting

SABC Sport can reveal that Royal AM have filed a court interdict against the Premier Soccer League board of governors meeting that was scheduled for Thursday morning.

Following last week’s ballot to cancel the club’s membership from the professional ranks by an overwhelming vote, the League called on the BOG to finalise the matter.

As things stand, the PSL has followed the NSL Handbook on removing one of their own, although this has not yet been communicated publicly by chairman Irvin Khoza or acting CEO Mato Madlala.

Royal AM were suspended from playing any of their domestic matches when it emerged the club had been taken over by a SARS curator in December last year.

This was part of an attempt to recoup a tax debt of around R40-million linked to club president Shauwn Mkhize and her family trust.

Despite several efforts by the curator to find a solution, which included auctioning off the status to potential buyers, the PSL executive committee felt the team could not be rescued and recommended all clubs under the NSL umbrella terminate their membership.

Earlier this week, Madlala invited clubs to another special meeting, this time to "consider matters relating to the cancellation of Royal AM", and "to take such resolutions as maybe necessary [if any] arising from the cancellation."

The virtual meeting was scheduled for 11:00 on Thursday, but had to be adjourned with news that Royal AM had filed an urgent court interdict.

It remains to be seen now which direction the court points both parties, with the PSL running out of time regarding how the 2024/25 Betway Premiership season will wrap up.
