Breaking: Olwethu Makhanya bids Stellies farewell ahead of MLS transfer

Stellenbosch FC defender Olwethu Makhanya has bid the club farewell ahead of a transfer to North America.

The 19-year-old spent just one season in the topflight and appears to have made the most of it, with SABC Sport being informed a move to Major League Soccer in the United States is being lined-up.

Makhanya is represented by renowned agent Matthew Moore, who has a vast network in America and brokered the deal for utility player Njabulo Blom to join St Louis City from Kaizer Chiefs in December last year.

Stellies have yet to issue a statement of their own, but Makhanya has since let the cat out the bag by penning a goodbye message.

"I would like to thank Stellenbosch FC for the opportunity they gave me and the great confidence that was shown in me. It is with mixed emotions that I bid farewell to the team. I have enjoyed working with you all and have made any fond memories during my time here,” the statement read.

“An incredible team that will forever remain in my heart, where everyone received me as a family member, showed me love, helped me grow as a player and especially as a person. I'm very lucky to have been part of not just a great team but great human beings with huge hearts It is with great pride that I have accepted a new challenge and as I leave the club. I would like to wish the team and everyone all the best in the next seasons. With much love and gratitude.”

Stellenbosch FC have since confirmed Philadelphia Union as Makhanya's destination.
