Brandon Truter reflects on Sekhukhune United's 2022/23 progress

Sekhukhune United coach Brandon Truter has given a brief review of the 2022/23 season with one DStv Premiership match to go to seal a top-eight spot this Saturday.

They host SuperSport United, who also need all three points to have a chance of qualifying for next season’s CAF Champions League ahead of Orlando Pirates.

Having arrived in the mid-season break in December last year, Truter feels it's been a challenging season across the board given the disruption the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar caused.

"This season, I think for all the clubs, was different [because] of the World Cup. We had to have another pre-season [in December] and another plan to keep the players active during that period, and getting them fit again for the restart," said Truter.

"I came in during that pre-season or during that break, and Sekhukhune was one of the first teams back in training, that's why we're also feeling the fatigue, which we are having to manage at this moment. But the season was difficult for everybody."

However, looking back at where he found Sekhukhune upon succeeding Kaitano Tembo, 'Brakkies' has plenty to be proud of as far as his side's trajectory is concerned.

"What I'm [pleased with] is the progress made from 15th position, being relegation candidates, and having never progressed past the last-32 of the Nedbank Cup," he reflected.

"There's so much progress the team has made, players that didn't play before I came in – players that were written off, like 'Vila' [Sibusiso Vilakazi] and other guys, Eddie Gyimah as well – people didn't give him a chance.

"Now you can see what they all have to offer, and that's the progress we've made and that's there [to build from in the new season]."
