Barcelona suffer seven-week blow as Xavi Espart joins injury list

Barcelona have suffered another defensive setback after full-back Xavi Espart was ruled out for around seven weeks with an ankle injury sustained in Sunday's 2-1 La Liga defeat by Real Madrid.

The 19-year-old suffered an injury to the syndesmosis joint in his right ankle following a collision with an opponent during the match at home. He was replaced by Alejandro Balde in the 30th minute.

Barcelona confirmed the extent of the injury in a medical statement, saying: "Tests carried out have confirmed that Xavi Espart is suffering from an injury to the syndesmosis joint in his right ankle due to a collision with an opposing player in the game against Real Madrid.

"The player will be out for around seven weeks."

Espart has made nine appearances for the Catalan club this season, scoring twice and providing two assists. His absence could keep him out of action until 2027, with Barcelona scheduled to play their final match of 2026 on December 20.

The injury adds to Barcelona's growing defensive problems, with Andreas Christensen, Jules Kounde and Eric Garcia also unavailable.

Joao Cancelo, Balde, Pau Cubarsi and Gerard Martin are now the only available defenders in the squad, leaving Barcelona with limited options as they attempt to manage a demanding schedule.
