Barcelona's Joao Cancelo shines yet Hansi Flick seeks 'improvement'

The 31-year-old full-back scored a goal and won a crucial penalty as Barcelona secured a 5-2 victory over Sevilla, underlining why the club invested in him during the winter transfer window. Cancelo's attacking impact has been undeniable, and his performances are already helping the team.

"He needed time to adjust to certain things. He'd played his last matches in November and hadn't seen any playing time, but he's fantastic," Flick said after the Sevilla game. "He scored a great goal and also drew the penalties. I think signing him was the right decision."

Despite the glowing praise, Flick is clear that Cancelo's development is not complete. The coach wants improvements in tactical discipline and defensive concentration, particularly as Barcelona's high defensive line demands constant focus and sharp awareness.

Cancelo's tendency to shine going forward but occasionally struggle defensively has been noted before. Under Flick's system, the German manager is emphasising these details to make Cancelo a fully rounded player.

Still, the club is pleased with his contributions. Earlier in the season, Cancelo was named MVP in a win over Levante after registering an assist, and he has continued to deliver influential performances since.

As Cancelo adapts further, he is quickly establishing himself as a key figure in Barcelona's squad, combining attacking threat with the potential to become defensively reliable under Flick's guidance.
