Bandile Shandu affirms player commitment amid Jose Riveiro exit

Orlando Pirates defender Bandile Shandu has given club supporters the assurance that players have not dropped their heads following confirmation of coach Jose Riveiro imminent departure.

Pirates earlier confirmed the Spanish mentor will not be renewing his contract beyond the current season and, following mixed results in recent matches, there have been suggestions that perhaps the club’s announcement was premature.

But, ahead of the Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday, Shandu insists the news that Riveiro was on his way out has not affected their commitment to still gun for the Betway Premiership title.

"I think for us, as players, and what we've been doing is focussing on the pitch and what what we need to do, not too focussed on what's happening outside or what's being said, so that's what we've been doing," said Shandu.

"And that's been our mindset, and that's what we've been thinking about, and trying to focus on in the next game."

Shandu says the camaraderie under Riveiro has not changed and could very well be what makes a difference against Amakhosi.

"Teamwork is what's been working for us – the tactical work, what the coach needs and wants, and doing that with the fighting spirit we have – I think that's important for us and it's what has been working, and the results will take care of itself," he added.

The 30-year-old, who has spent long spells out of the team but recently made a comeback with Deano van Rooyen out injured, also touched on potentially getting the nod for the Derby.

"We've got a solid group and, coming back [into the team], they've made it easy. We're very united and together – the unity is incredible and it shows on the pitch as well.

"The camaraderie is exceptional, and anything in terms of a transition in personnel is easy because of the unity we have."
