Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta confirms captain Martin Odegaard 'out for weeks'

The setback adds to an already stop-start campaign for the Norwegian midfielder, who has been plagued by multiple injury issues this season.

Odegaard sustained a medial collateral ligament injury during Arsenal's 2-0 victory over West Ham on October 4, forcing him off before half-time. While earlier problems this season were related to a shoulder issue, this latest injury is unrelated and considered more serious in terms of recovery time.

"He will be out for weeks. There's no definite date for his return," Arteta said ahead of Arsenal's weekend clash with Fulham. "It's very unlucky what is happening with him and his injuries this season, but I think he will be back in a few weeks. We just need to see how his knee is progressing."

Though sidelined, Arteta emphasized Odegaard's continuing responsibility as club captain. "He cannot afford to be in a different mindset. He needs to drive the standards, be the example, and bring the energy even when he's not on the pitch," Arteta explained.

"The good thing is that he does everything possible to prevent injuries. Unfortunately, some of the ones he's had are very difficult to avoid. But he has to stay focused and lead off the pitch â” like a parent who has to show up for their kids no matter how they feel."

The Gunners boss is confident, however, that there is enough squad depth and quality to cope with their skipper's absence.

"Martin is a capital player for us. But we've been without him and others for most of the season and the squad has coped," said Arteta. "Players like Eberechi Eze, Ethan Nwaneri, or Mikel Merino could fill in, and we'll continue rotating."

Arsenal is also dealing with other injury issues, with Gabriel Jesus, Kai Havertz, and Noni Madueke also sidelined.
