Arne Slot rallies Liverpool ahead of intense derby clash with Everton

Arne Slot has called on Liverpool to be ready for intensity as the Premier League champions prepare to face Everton in Saturday's Merseyside derby at Anfield.

Speaking at the AXA Training Centre on Friday, Slot underlined both the rivalry and respect between the two clubs, while praising the improvements Everton have made under David Moyes.

"When we faced them last season, they had a very good spell, and they have continued that into this season," said Slot. "They have made some good signings, including Jack Grealish, who is doing really well for them. It shows the quality they have."

The Dutchman also took a moment to highlight Everton's show of solidarity after the death of Diogo Jota earlier this year. "In those tragic moments, they showed their respect. The rivalry is always there, but the respect is there too," he said.

For Liverpool's new arrivals, Slot explained that experience in high-pressure matches would serve them well. "It is not like they are rookies. Florian Wirtz, for example, has played in many big games already. Of course, this derby is special, but they know what to expect. Players like Virgil (van Dijk) and Mo (Salah) will also tell them what it means."

Salah's form was another key talking point, with Slot praising the Egyptian's ability to make a difference even when not at his best. "Great players still contribute if they don't play well. Mo is like that, even if he isn't in top form, he gives goals and assists. That is what makes him so special," he said.

Slot also hinted at tactical flexibility, suggesting he could pair Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike together if required. "We have mainly played 4-3-3, but at times we have finished games with two strikers. With the options we have, that is always possible."

Liverpool's tendency to concede leads has been a concern, with the team surrendering two-goal advantages twice already this season.

Slot admitted it was something that needed to improve. "It is not ideal. Twice we gave away a 2-0 lead, in very different ways. We must improve because you cannot keep using that much energy chasing games late on," he explained.

With both teams in strong form, Anfield is set for another fierce derby. "Every game at Anfield is special," said Slot. "But this derby is even more special."
