Andoni Iraola plays down Jeremie Frimpong injury fears after Liverpool loss

Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola has played down concerns over Jeremie Frimpong after the defender was substituted during the Reds' 4-2 pre-season defeat to Leeds United in Chicago on Sunday.

Frimpong asked to come off midway through the second half, raising fears of another injury setback for Liverpool ahead of the new Premier League season. However, Iraola said he believes the Netherlands international was only dealing with fatigue rather than a serious problem.

"Jeremie asked for the sub but I don't think it's an injury," Iraola told Liverpool's media channels after the match.

"It was just some overload and I hope he's not injured in that way. I don't think we've lost anyone."

Liverpool are already managing several injury concerns before the new campaign begins. Joe Gomez is expected to miss the start of the season after suffering a muscle injury during the pre-season victory over Sunderland, while Conor Bradley, Hugo Ekitike and Giovanni Leoni are continuing their recoveries on the sidelines.

Despite the disappointing result against Leeds, Iraola believes the match provided valuable lessons as Liverpool completed their pre-season tour of the United States.

"Obviously it's not the result you want but I think it was probably the most useful friendly we played - in a positive way in the first half and in a negative way in the second half," he said.

"We've learned a lot from today and I think we can take good conclusions and solve some things."

Iraola, who took charge of Liverpool in June following Arne Slot's departure, will now turn his attention to the final stages of pre-season as he prepares the squad for the new campaign.

Liverpool's next friendly will be against AS Monaco at Anfield on 9 August, their first match back on home soil after the United States tour.
