Wirtz doubled Liverpool's lead shortly after Ryan Gravenberch had opened the scoring, with the goals arriving just 89 seconds apart in the first half. Wolves pulled a goal back after the break through Santiago Bueno, but Liverpool held on to secure a fourth consecutive win in all competitions.
The goal marked a significant moment for Wirtz, who joined Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen before the beginning of the season for an initial fee reported to be around 100 million pounds, rising to 116 million pounds with add-ons. The 22-year-old had gone more than 20 appearances without scoring, drawing criticism despite a series of encouraging displays.
Slot said the reaction to the goal showed how important it was for the player. "I'm quite sure it was a relief for him," the Liverpool manager said. "You could see it in his reaction and in the reaction of his teammates. They were really happy for him."
The Dutchman defended Wirtz's overall contribution, suggesting his influence had been overlooked because of a focus on goals and assists. "Sometimes we forget what else there is to do during a game," Slot said. "He's had multiple good games for us and he's getting better and fitter every time he plays. It was not a surprise to me that he scored today."
Slot acknowledged, however, that Liverpool did not fully control the second half after going two goals ahead. "A goal can change the momentum," he said. "It became a more equal game and you are frightened every time they arrive, but I don't think we conceded many big chances. I saw a team fighting to get the win over the line."
The result moves Liverpool up to fifth in the table. They are next in action at home against Leeds United on January 1, as Slot continues to look for improvement despite a run of positive results.
Wirtz said he is still adapting to the physical demands of the Premier League. "Every game I feel a bit better," he said. "I know it's the hardest league in the world and I just have to get used to it."
Slot remains confident more goals will follow. "One goal is not enough," he said. "He will score many more for us than just this one."
