Amorim explains new defensive role for Nigeria's Chukwueze at AC Milan

AC Milan manager Ruben Amorim has deployed attacker Samuel Chukwueze in a new wing-back position at the start of his tenure with the Serie A giants ahead of the 2026/27 league opener.

The 27-year-old Nigerian star has spent most of his professional career as an attacking winger for both club and country, however, the new Rossoneri boss has decided to use him as a right wing-back.

Chukwueze featured in his new role in the new role in the pre-season friendly 4-2 win against Amorim's former club Manchester United last week, scoring the first equalizer of the match.

The Super Eagles forward has featured in 70 matches since joining Milan after a stint on loan to Premier League side Fulham from Villarreal, scoring eight goals while providing three assists.

"It depends on the mentality of the player," said Amorim in a pre-match conference when asked about Chukwueze's redeployment.

"Sometimes people just look at one player because he's really good offensively and they think he cannot defend.

"Defending is about spirit and character, which Chukwueze has. He's improving, of course he's not the typical defender, but we think he suits our game. He can really help us control the ball and I think he defended much better against Man United."

The Italian giants will kick-off their 2026/27 league campaign against Torino at the Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino on Sunday.
