AmaZulu to part ways with long-serving skipper Veli Mothwa

SABC Sport can confirm goalkeeper Veli Mothwa will be leaving AmaZulu at the end of his contract next month.

The 34-year-old would have been closing in on five seasons with the KwaZulu-Natal outfit if he was staying beyond June, however the public broadcaster has it on good authority this chapter of his career is coming to an end.

It’s believed Mothwa, who joined Usuthu from Chippa United in November 2020, has already received verbal enquiries elsewhere and is set to put pen to paper upon Usuthu issuing his clearance.

The arrival of Richards Ofori earlier in the season almost immediately limited Mothwa’s game time at the KwaZulu-Natal outfit.

Initially the Bafana Bafana shot stopper had been the preferred first-choice under coach Pablo Franco Martin before the Spanish mentor was sacked just three matches into the new Betway Premiership campaign.

Martin was replaced by Arthur Zwane, initially alongside Vusumuzi Vilakazi as co-coaches before the latter resigned a few months later, with AmaZulu finishing in an impressive sixth-place.

Mothwa only managed a seven games in this campaign and did not make the matchday squads for their final two fixtures against Polokwane City and Orlando Pirates.

When approached for comment on player movements at Usuthu earlier this week, chairman Sandile Zungu said he is still due a meeting with the technical team before any official announcements could be made.
