Algeria coach happy to have World Cup fate in own hands after win against Jordan

Algeria head coach Vladimir Petkovic is pleased that his team will have their World Cup fate in their own hands going into the final group game following a 2-1 comeback victory against Jordan.

The African nation opened the global tournament with a 3-0 defeat against defending champions Argentina but goals from Nadhir Benbouali and Amine Gouiri ensured they picked up maximum points in the second encounter.

Algeria now take on Austria in the final group J clash knowing that a victory would guarantee them a place in the last 32 of the competition.

Petkovic told reporters: "I think ultimately we've produced two good performances. We deserve to win this game, and it certainly gives us a lot of confidence and belief ahead of our next match.

"What mattered for us was to win this match, to stay in the hunt, to make it through to the knockout stage, and ultimately to have our fate in our own hands. Nothing has yet been decided, but we're in a good position."

Jordan, meanwhile, will bow out of the tournament after two defeats but coach Jamal Sellami said proud of their World Cup campaign with a game against Argentina still to come.

The Asian team bow out of the World Cup after consecutive defeats â- they lost 3-1 to Austria in their opener.

"The Algerian team did some substitutions that might have made a difference," Sellami said. "They had a very tall offensive player... I think our lack of experience allowed them to score from two corner kicks when we were waiting to make our own substitutions with the cooling break.

"Generally speaking, we had a great match, and we should be proud of our performance. Very first experience in the World Cup, we were better than the first match. Now for us facing Argentina is an opportunity. It's an opportunity for us to perform well and leave a great mark worthy of Jordanian football."
