Sudesh Singh: We have the belief to win this Semi-Final

Singh along with South African compatriot Tyrese Steyn joined the Scorches ahead of the 2026 edition of the WAFCON with the latter serving as a Performance Analyst. 

Along with the Malawi squad, they are enjoying what has been a fairy-tale debut at the tournament having already secured a place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. 

Speaking exclusively to SABC Sport, Singh has admitted that Algeria will not be an easy task and says that although individually they are not outstanding players, collectively they are well equipped.

"We have the belief that we can win this game because we enter every match trying to play positive football and trying to win the game. Algeria have a good coach and they are well organised on the field. They don't have many outstanding individual players, but they operate at a very high tactical level."

The former South African Football Association coaches’ director has credited the players’ mentality at the tournament which he says has been centered around the philosophy instilled into the team that they always go out to win and to score goals.

Singh mentioned that they follow a game model which is based on the strengths in the Malawi squad, which is the attacking prowess of the Chawinga sisters (Tabitha and Temwa) adding that through the sisters, the Malawian attack has more bite than any other team in the tournament. 

The Chawinga sisters have already scored six goals between them at the tournament so far, with Temwa joint second in the golden boot race with 4 goals and behind only Barbra Banda of Zambia (5 goals).

"Our game model is based on the strengths of our players, especially the two world class Chawinga sisters. They give our attack more bite than any other team in this tournament."

Singh adds that the objective of qualifying for the FIFA Women's World Cup is now behind them. However, he says the next task is to improve the Malawi Women's national team’s FIFA and CAF rankings. 

The Scorchers are currently ranked 153rd in the latest FIFA World rankings and 32nd on the continent.
