Agent: Why Mathoho is leaving Chiefs

Kaizer Chiefs veteran defender Erick Mathoho will leave the club after 11 years of highs and lows, but his career in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) topflight is not yet over, according to his agent.

It's unclear whether 'Tower' will be allowed to make his final appearance for Amakhosi when they host Cape Town City in the DStv Premiership on Saturday at FNB Stadium.

But the chances are slim considering Mathoho, a two-time league winner with the Glamour Boys has only featured once for coach Arthur Zwane during the current campaign.

The player’s agent Basia Michaels has confirmed the two parties have agreed this is the end of the road, although the Bafana Bafana international still has plans to offer his services to another rival.

“We’ve been in discussion with Chiefs and based on the lack of game time and Tower’s age [33] we would like to end his career playing football, that’s probably the biggest deciding factor,” Michaels told SABC Sport

“We have had extensive and professional conversations with the senior management, and from those conversations, we can clearly see a future away from Naturena with Tower playing football for the next three years or so.”

Michaels revealed she’s already had enquiries for the centre-back following what appears to have been a call by Chiefs to not renew Mathoho’s contract beyond this season.

“I wouldn’t tie it down to it being solely their decision. We have had suitors for Tower, probably since the first days of him not playing regularly, making enquiries so we do know that we have a few options which I am not at liberty to discuss with you yet. I do respect the processes of football and that would definitely be them announcing such a heavy hitter and adding him to their roster,” she explained.

“We want Tower to play and enjoy his football as his career tapers off – playing football is one of the most important things for all footballers.”
