Folz exit looms as assistant Dlamini takes over training

AmaZulu coach Romain Folz is understood to have missed the team’s training session on Tuesday morning with his assistant Ayanda Dlamini being asked to take charge, SABC Sport has been informed.

It's unclear whether this means the end of the Frenchmen, but with Usuthu having lost three games in a row and being knocked out of the Nedbank Cup by amateur side Dondol Stars last month, the decision to fire Folz is expected.

Folz was surprisingly handed a new three-year contract in February despite concerns from the AmaZulu supporters, who questioned whether this was the right call made by chairman Sandile Zungu.

Usuthu had initially hired Folz on a short-term deal until the end of the season when they brought him on board as a replacement for Brandon Truter.

But after only four wins in 19 games, Folz hasn’t won the fans over…and a tweet by one of the club directors, Manzini Zungu, on Saturday night further suggested there could be another coaching change in Durban.

He took to social media to express his displeasure at watching AmaZulu suffer a 1-0 to Swallows FC in a DStv Premiership clash played at Moses Mabhida Stadium saying “as for losing to Swallows, kwanele (it’s enough).”

Attempts to reach chairman Zungu for comment were futile at the time of publication, as his phone rang unanswered and he did not respond to texts. SABC Sport did manage to get hold of the coach’s representative.

“I do not have concrete information, but I have also heard the coach was not at training today. But I don’t know why because I haven’t spoken to him. I have just come out of back-to-back meetings and will get the full story before I make any comments,” was all agent John Mathye could say.

Editor's note:

The club has since announced Dlamini will be the interim coach till the end of the season, while Folz moves to a technical director role "advising the president on the technical aspects of AmaZulu's Vision 2032"

"His [Dlamini] mandate is to fight for the remaining 18 points that are on offer.”

“Dlamini has the huge task to prepare the team for the upcoming match against Cape Town City this weekend.” “With Folz, there are many aspects that we want to continue with from him.

“He will be expected not to interfere with the day-to-day running of the team. We thank him for his contribution to the team,” said club president Sandile Zungu.
