URC: Stormers too strong for toiling Ospreys in Cape Town

The Stormers were patient in their 26-10 victory over the Ospreys in the second round of the United Rugby Championship on Friday night.

A balmy Cape Town evening saw plenty of running rugby and the Ospreys were well in the match with 25 to play, but ultimately the 15-7 penalty count cost them the match.

It was the visitors who enjoyed a bright start, with scrumhalf Kieran Hardy sniping around the fringes and scoring the opening try in the third minute. The Stormers then caught them napping after goal goal-line dropout, with flyhalf Jurie Matthee sending a cross-kick for Evan Roos to gather and score.

Hardy got his brace when the Ospreys attacked the blindside of the scrum, with Daniel Kasende rounding his defender and fining the No.9 on his inside, who went over untouched.

A late penalty to the hosts saw the team head down the tunnel with the Welshmen deservedly leading 8-10.

But it was in the second stanza when the Osprey's ill-discipline began to show. Mathee slotted two penalties to take the lead, then they scored a fantastic try on the 58-minute mark.

The Stormers retrieved a contestable kick and centurion Dewaldt Duvenage sent it down the backline, where Man of the Match Wandisile Simelane showed his running skills to combine with Seabelo Senatla and captain Ruhan Nel, with Simelane gathering a chip through to score. Mathee added the extras and the lead shot out to eleven points.

As the clock wound down, the Welsh bodies began to tire. The Stormers turned to their lineout maul, and replacement Paul de Villiers would crash over from close range to seal the deal.
