URC: Stormers maintain winning momentum after seeing off Cardiff in Cape Town

The Stormers will go into the United Rugby Championship (URC) playoffs with momentum after securing a 34-24 bonus-point win against Cardiff at the DHL Stadium on Friday.

Wingers Suleiman Hartzenberg and Leolin Zas scored a brace of tries apiece as the home side scored five tries to the Welsh outfit's four.

Zas opened the scoring in the 10th minute but Cardiff responded with a try of their own through loosehead prop Danny Southworth while Callum Sheedy converted.

Hartzenberg, playing in his 50th match for the Stormers, then showed his finishing prowess with neat try with Damian Willemse adding the extras from the kicking tee.

The Welsh team were then reduced to 14 men when Southworth was shown a red card for a dangerous tackle on tighthead prop Neethling Fouche.

Zas then went over for his ninth try of the season with Willemse adding the conversion to extend the home team's lead.

Cardiff however hit back just before halftime when left-wing Gabe Hamer-Webb went over for a try but the conversion was disallowed for exceeding the time limit as the Stormers took a 19-12 lead into the break.

Hartzenberg completed his brace early after the interval but again the visitors responded as centre Harri Millard went over for a try.

Willemse then received his marching orders for a dangerous tackle on Hamer-Webb, leaving both sides with 14 men going into the final quarter of the contest.

Connor Evans' try then put daylight on the scoreboard in favour of the hosts although Dafydd Hughesâ™ late five-pointer gave Cardiff hope as Sheedyâ™s conversion brought the deficit down to seven points.

Sasha Feinberg-Mngomezulu however slotted a late penalty that sealed the game for the Stormers which also denied the Welsh outfit a losing bonus-point.

John Dobson's charges will now wait the final outcome of Saturday's results to check if they remain in South Africa or travel to Scotland for their quarter-final clash.
