Stormers anxiously awaiting injury assessment on Frans Malherbe

The Stormers are anxiously awaiting the outcome of medical scans scheduled for next week that will determine the extent of a back injury sustained by seasoned Springbok tighthead prop Frans Malherbe.

Director of Rugby John Dobson confirmed on Friday that Malherbe had been withdrawn from the squad set to face Connacht in the 15th round of the United Rugby Championship this Saturday at DHL Stadium. The decision follows ongoing concerns related to a back issue that has been troubling the prop for some time.

Malherbe was ruled out of contention shortly before the official team announcement. His absence sees Sazi Sandi elevated to the starting XV in the number three jersey. Under normal circumstances, the Stormers would turn to Neethling Fouche as the next option in the front row. However, Fouche is currently serving a suspension following a controversial red card against Munster, compounded by a disciplinary process Dobson has openly criticized.

While Dobson refrained from further elaborating on the Fouche matter, he has previously expressed frustration at the handling of the incident, calling into question the standard of officiating and the processes that followed.

However, the focus now shifts firmly to Malherbe, whose condition could significantly impact the Stormers' campaign.

"I wish I could say this was purely precautionary, but unfortunately, that's not the case," said Dobson. "Frans has been managing a recurring back issue, particularly affecting his posture in scrummaging. Following medical advice, we've withdrawn him from this fixture while we await scan results. He might be available as early as next week, or he could face a more extended period on the sidelines. With back injuries, the prognosis is often unpredictable."

Dobson's caution is informed by recent history, notably the case of Steven Kitshoff, Malherbe's long-time front-row partner for both the Stormers and Springboks. Kitshoff sustained an injury during a Currie Cup match last August and was ultimately forced to retire earlier this year.

While it would be premature to draw parallels or raise alarm, Malherbe's absence, coupled with that of Fouche, presents both a challenge and an opportunity for the Stormers.

"This situation gives us the chance to assess Sazi Sandi in a starting role," Dobson added. "We have always rated him highly and believe he has considerable potential. The presence of two established internationals has perhaps limited his exposure, but now he has the platform to showcase his abilities and continue developing."

Dobson also expressed confidence in veteran Brok Harris, who will provide cover off the bench. The 40-year-old remains a valuable asset for the Stormers due to his versatility and leadership, capable of playing on both sides of the scrum.

As the Stormers prepare for a crucial phase in the URC season, the management and medical team will be hoping for positive news regarding Malherbe's fitness in the coming days.
