Springbok rookie Morne van den Berg wins big at Lions' awards evening

Lions livewire Morne van der Berg was named the Player of the Year for the 2024/25 season at an awards ceremony on Tuesday night.

The Johannesburg franchise hosted its annual awards evening at Ellis Park, with Springboks van den Berg and Asenathi Ntlabakanye taking home accolades.

"Such an honour for me to be recognised for these awards," said van den Berg, who also scooped the International Backline Player of the Year award.

"A huge credit to my teammates at the Lions and the incredible coaching staff who allow us to express ourselves on the field. The mindset in our environment is 'team first', which is why I believe that these accolades mean nothing without the team behind me."

Van den Berg made his Springbok debut against Portugal last year, then had impressive outings against the Barbarians and Italy this season. He won Man of the Match for his two tries against the Italians.

Domestically, the 27-year-old has featured in virtually every Lions match outside the Currie Cup, becoming a stalwart of the side.

Meanwhile, teammate Ntlabakanye was named the International Forward of the Year and the Players' Player of the Year. The prop has become a cult hero for the franchise, with his bullocking runs, proper scrummaging and soft hands.

Also among the awards was Springbok U20 star Hashmim Pead, who was electric in the Baby Boks' successful World Rugby U20 Championship campaign. The 20-year-old was named Junior Player of the Year.
