South Africans overseas: Benhard Janse van Rensburg stars in Bristol Bears point fest

Former Cheetahs and Sharks centre Benhard Janse van Rensburg produced a stellar all-round display in the Bristol Bears' 49-34 win over Gloucester in the English Premiership.

English Premiership

There were many strong performances in the match but Van Rensburg stood out because he contributed all over the park on both attack and defence.

He ran for nearly 60 metres in 10 carries with one clean break, kept the ball moving along with the backline with 14 passes and also made 13 bone-crunching tackles to help his side to the win.

James Venter captained Gloucester and got himself a try in a strong performance of his own but was overshadowed by his compatriot.

JJ van der Mescht was good for the Northampton Saints, scoring a try and helping them to a 46-19 win over Newcastle Red Bulls.

He may well have been the featured player in this piece had he not also been sent off early in the second half for receiving a second yellow card.

Stefan Coetzee came off the bench and scored a try for Newcastle, with Luan de Bruin also playing a role as a second-half substitute, while Boeta Chamberlain started at fullback for the Red Bulls.

Hanro Leinbernberg started at eighth man for the Leicester Tigers and played a crucial role in their dramatic 22-20 win over Bath.

Thomas du Toit and Francois van Wyk came on as second-half subs for Bath to shore up the scrum.

Robert du Preez scored a try for Sale Sharks but otherwise struggled to make much of an impact on the game as they were humbled 14-65 by Saracens.

Ernest van Rhyn, Hyron Andrews and Marius Louw all joined Du Preez in the starting lineup for Sale.

Joseph Dweba returned to the starting lineup for Exeter Chiefs and played his part in an impressive 38-0 rout of Harlequins, while Ethan Burger made an appearance off the bench.

Stephan Lewies and Tyrone Green both started the match for Quins.

French Top 14

Tiaan Jacobs and Carlu Sadie helped the Bordeaux Begles pack dominate in their 27-12 win over Perpignan, with Tristan Tedder starting at fullback for the losing side.

Arno Botha came off the bench but was unable to turn the tide for Lyon, who went down 13-35 to Montpellier.

JT Jackson and Sikhumbuzo Notshe both started for Monauban but neither managed to stand out as their side was beaten heavily 19-54 by La Rochelle.

Joe Jonas started at fullback for Stade Francais but was hauled off shortly after half-time as they went down 24-29 to Castres.

United Rugby Championship

Werner Kok was one of the best players on the pitch for Ulster in their impressive 34-26 win over the Sharks in Durban.

The winger scored a try and ran for around 100 metres while also making 11 tackles on defence.

Eighth man Juarno Augustus also started for the Irish side and put in a big shift on defence with 10 tackles.

Wing Thaakir Abrahams ran for nearly 100 metres in seven carries, with three clean line breaks in an eye-opening performance for Munster in their 31-14 win over Irish rivals Leinster.

Jean Kleyn came off the bench for Munster a minute into the second half and shored up their defence noticeably with 14 tackles.

RG Snyman started the match at lock for Leinster but was subbed off early in the second half.

Kyle Steyn and Congolese star Daniel Kasende faced off on the wing for Glasgow Warriors and Ospreys respectively, with the former claiming a 42-17 win.

Marnus Van Der Merve played well in his 74 minutes on the pitch for Scarlets in their 18-29 defeat to the Lions, throwing in accurately at lineout time and hitting rucks with aggression.

Pierre Schoeman scrummed like a demon for Edinburgh in their 43-0 thrashing of Benetton, who featured South African Rhyno Christo Smith and Zimbabwean Eli Snyman.

Tinus de Beer played well without excelling for the Dragons as they were beaten 17-24 by Cardiff.

The flyhalf chipped in with four points and 17 tackles while also filling in when needed as playmaker with 15 passes.
