The highly anticipated clash, scheduled for 16:10, is the second game of a thrilling double-header, following the opening fixture between defending champions New Zealand and arch-rivals Australia at 14:00.
Junior Boks head coach Kevin Foote has named a dynamic and balanced match-day 23 for the showdown with the Pumitas, who pushed the South Africans to the limit during last year’s inaugural tournament in Australia.
Norton, a former SA U18 lock and national age-group cricketer, returns to the starting lineup to captain the side following a slight injury. He will lead a forward pack that includes Wandile Mlaba, a familiar face from last year’s campaign, and 2024 SA Schools and SA U18 skipper Sethu Mnebelele.
In the backline, fans can look forward to seeing Blitzbok speedster Gino Cupido and Cheswill Jooste on the wings, while Kyle Smith starts at flyhalf. Scrumhalf Haashim Pead also returns from injury, adding valuable experience at halfback.
On the bench, utility forward Batho Hlekani and exciting outside back JC Mars are set to inject energy when called upon.
Foote praised the team’s preparation in Gqeberha and the positive energy in the squad.
“The weather is great, and our hosts have been fantastic, which has given us a lot of energy in our training,” said Foote. “What stands out for me is the intent and joy of the players; the smiles on their faces tell me they are confident, excited, and see this opportunity to represent our country as a huge privilege.”
The coach admitted selection was tough due to the depth of talent in the squad.
“There are so many talented guys, which speaks volumes about our depth,” Foote explained. “We’ve gone with a more settled pack, only one change from our last warm-up against Hamilton’s, with Riley returning as captain.
Foote believes the continuity among the forwards will give the team a solid platform, while he’s equally excited about the attacking potential of the backs.
“We’ve done our homework and know Argentina will bring physicality and passion,” he added. “They’re proud competitors, especially around the contact area and set pieces. But we’re also excited to express ourselves and play a brand of rugby that reflects the South African spirit.”
Foote encouraged local fans to come out in support: “We’re proud to wear the Springbok on our hearts and represent this country. We’re hoping for a great crowd and to deliver an exciting performance.”
