Nelson Mandela Bay in line to host Springboks' season opener vs Barbarians

The Springboks are eyeing a return to a familiar coastal venue for their final tune-up ahead of the start of the 2026 season.

According to Rapport, SA Rugby is in advanced talks with Gqeberha city officials to host the Boks' non-cap clash against the Barbarians on 27 June at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

Although nothing has been officially confirmed, a trusted source suggested that discussions are progressing well.

The match is set to act as a key warm-up before the Springboks take on England in the opening game of the new Nations Championship at Ellis Park on 4 July, which also doubles as their first Test match of the season.

Last year, the world champs also kicked off their 2025 campaign with a warm-up match against the Baabaas in Cape Town, winning 54-7.

There had been speculation this year's clash could be held at Twickenham, but current plans appear to be firmly focused on keeping the game in South Africa.

The encounter is expected to be of particular importance for players returning from Japan.

With the Japanese club season wrapping up at the end of May - and some teams finishing earlier if they miss the playoffs - coach Rassie Erasmus will be keen to ensure those players arrive back fully prepared for the England Test.
