Lions' metronome Chris Smith signs on the dotted line until 2029

Smith has been a stalwart at No.10 since joining the Lions in 2025. Forged in the cauldron of Pro D2 rugby with Oyonnax the season prior, the pivot enjoyed a superlative United Rugby Championship

Last season, his metronomic kicking came to the fore as he accumulated 149 kicking points through 49 conversions and 17 penalties, finishing ahead of Stormers' flyhalf Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu for the URC's Golden Boot.

The 32-year-old helped the Lions to their first-ever playoff berth in the competition, as well as the SA Shield, awarded to the highest-ranked South African team.

As such, the Lions were keen to pin down their man for the next few seasons. A short clip on socials revealed a relaxed Smith revealing he has signed on until 2029.

The Lions got their latest URC season off to a positive start last Saturday, defeating reigning champions Leinster 27-26 at Ellis Park. They host Ospreys this weekend.
