Junior Boks ring the changes for Australia clash in Gqeberha

The Junior Springboks are set for their second Rugby Championship U20 clash when they face a fired-up Australian side at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha on Thursday.

Head coach Kevin Foote has shuffled his squad, bringing in fresh legs and international experience in a bid to maintain momentum after their opening win over Argentina.

Four players who featured in last year’s SA U20 campaign: JC Mars, Wandile Mlaba, Batho Hlekani, and Herman Lubbe, have cracked the starting line-up for the Australia encounter. Foote emphasised the importance of squad rotation given the compact nature of the tournament, with three high-intensity fixtures squeezed into just 11 days.
“With such a short turnaround between matches, managing player load is key,” said Foote. “We’re also aiming to build squad depth and give more players exposure to the demands of top-level international rugby.”

Up front, the Junior Boks will be led by captain Riley Norton, who retains his place at lock alongside Morne Venter. The front row features Simphiwe Ngobese and Lubbe at prop, with Juandre Schoeman starting at hooker.
The back row brings in Xola Nyali, fresh from a standout Varsity Cup campaign with UCT, alongside Hlekani and Mlaba, who shifts to No. 8.
Foote has also opted for a new halfback pairing with Ceano Everson starting at scrumhalf and Vusi Moyo at flyhalf. In the midfield, Dominic Malgas partners with Scott Nel, while the back three boasts pace and flair through Cheswill Jooste (right wing), Siya Ndlozi (left wing), and Mars at fullback.
Australia, who forced a dramatic draw against New Zealand in the opening round, will be eager to secure their first win, and Foote is fully aware of the threat they pose.
“Australia are a big challenge. They move the ball well and play with width. Chris Whitaker is an attack-minded coach, and they’ll come at us with smart set-piece plays and intensity,” said Foote. “We’ve got a well-balanced match-day 23, speed in the backs, size in the forwards, and we’re excited for the battle ahead.”
The match promises to be a high-octane affair, with both teams chasing key momentum in the race for the U20 Rugby Championship title.
