Joey Mongalo lauds Sharks leadership in semifinal confirmation victory

Natal Sharks coach Joey Mongalo praised the leadership after Saturday's bonus-point Currie Cup win over the Golden Lions at Kings Park Stadium, which confirmed their home semifinals.

The hosts fought their way back from 14-nil down with 10 minutes remaining in the first half, with two tries to level going into the break.

Following the 29-21 victory, Mongalo singled out his captain for ensuring the team never hung their heads despite seemingly having their backs against the wall.

"Character one, but also just leadership. I think Reniel Hugo is just one of the best men and one of the best leaders I've ever met. So, when things get tough on the field, I know that he and I think alike, and he's got a way with his quiet leadership to get the team still going. So, for him like Lionel [Cronje] and Tiaan [Fourie], so we've got quite a few guys in that space who help lead the guys on the field. I'd say that's definitely a factor", he said.

The Sharks' win means the Lions’ 2023 campaign is over, with one round of regular-season matches still to be played. And Mongalo described the match as ideal ‘preparation’ for the pending playoff.

“I think they gave us the perfect prep for a semi-final because I don't think it can be tougher than being 14-0 down, playing against a very desperate team that's playing to stay alive in the competition. So, it's probably the best practice, and I say that respectfully.”

The Durbanites will travel to the Western Province for the final round-robin match next weekend. A victory there will mean they host the final match, should they win their semifinal. A victory for the hosts gives them an outside chance to sneak into the playoffs.
