Hawies Fourie encouraged by Kavaliers display against Stormers XXIII

Sanlam Boland Kavaliers head coach Hawies Fourie has expressed satisfaction with his side’s performance after they opened their account for the 2026 Carling Currie Cup with a convincing 54-26 victory over a DHL Stormers XXIII outfit in Wellington.

While pleased with the result and the attacking intent shown by his players, Fourie admitted there were still several scoring opportunities left unfinished.

"I feel that it was a solid start, although it wasn't a great start. We spilled a lot of chances on attack when we just needed to make one more pass or not a forward pass, so there's a lot to work on. I feel our set piece was really good and we turned over their line-outs, our maul-stop also improved and we had a few good scrums."

The DHL Stormers XXIII side will participate in the Carling Currie Cup for the first time this season as part of a restructuring that has brought all Stormers Rugby professional teams under a single identity.

The move marks a new chapter for the Cape franchise in South Africa’s premier domestic competition.

Although the Kavaliers crossed for eight tries in an impressive attacking display, Fourie believes there is still significant work to be done on defence ahead of their Currie Cup opener against the Bulls on 19 July at Boland Stadium.

Boland’s preparations continue with another pre-season fixture against Griquas on Tuesday, providing the squad with another valuable opportunity to fine-tune combinations before the start of the campaign.

Fourie says one of the biggest positives from the Stormers encounter was coming through the match without any injury concerns, however, he expects a sterner examination against the Kimberley outfit.
