Eddie Jones confident Japan can upset the Springboks at Wembley

After coming close to a famous upset win over the Wallabies, Japan coach Eddie Jones says his team is ready to beat the Springboks in England.

Jones' Japan side are buzzing with confidence after very nearly upsetting Australia in Tokyo on Saturday, with the Wallabies ultimately hanging on for a 19-15 win.

The Brave Blossoms were particularly impressive on defence, completing 96 per cent of their 218 tackles to keep Joe Schmidt's men successfully contained for most of the match.

Understandably, Jones is feeling confident about his side's prospects - insisting the Boks are beatable at Wembley next weekend.

"We're going there thinking we're going to win," Jones said ahead of next weekend's clash.

"South Africa are like everyone, if you put pressure on and get in their face they make mistakes.

"Imagine beating South Africa at Wembley, that would be iconic."

If Japan were to win next weekend, it wouldn't be the first time they'd caused a major upset on the international stage against the Boks.

The Brave Blossoms pulled off arguably the greatest upset in Rugby World Cup history when they beat South Africa 34-32 on English soil a decade ago - a victory still remembered as the 'Brighton Miracle.'

Since then, the Boks have bounced back strongly, with two comfortable wins (41-7 and 26-3) over Japan recorded back in 2019.

But Jones has been hard at work over the last few years molding his current Japan squad into a more formidable unit.

"What I'm super pleased about is that now we (Japan) are a team that stays in the fight," Jones added.

"We kept going, we could have won the game in the end but we weren't quite good enough."
