South African rugby is mourning the loss of Hendricks, the former Bulls and Springbok star, who passed away after suffering a heart attack.
September, who knew him from their early days at Roses United, says Cornal’s journey inspired a generation in a community where opportunities were few.
"The impact Cornal has left on Boland rugby is simply phenomenal. He spoke about and delivered hope for our community, and he quickly became a hometown hero as a young man," explained September.
From humble beginnings at Berg River High School, without the usual Craven Week honours, Cornal Hendricks carved out a remarkable career.
September reflects on his rise through club and provincial rugby, all the way to the Springboks.
"Club rugby, local school rugby, after that, the provincial team, then played for the Chetahs, played Super Rugby, was involved in Springbok sevens, and he eventually made it into the Springbok team."
Despite many setbacks, Hendricks made his mark early. One standout moment came during a match in Saldanha, showing his determination to be more than just a late substitution.
September, now an assistant coach with the Springbok Women, remembers the match clearly.
"I still remember there was a game we played in Saldanha Bay, and Cornal came on in the last minute to chase down a kick, and the way he conducted himself as a youngster, doing what was needed of him, was massive," reflected a nostalgic September.
In 2017, when most clubs were reluctant to sign him due to his heart condition, Roses United welcomed Hendricks back.
September recalls it as a powerful moment, not just for the club, but for the entire community.
While his heart condition once put his professional future in doubt, it never stopped Hendricks from making an impact.
September says he used every opportunity to uplift and mentor others, often through tough love and honest advice.
Cornal Hendricks leaves behind more than memories of brilliance on the rugby field.
For September, it’s the message Cornal lived by that continues to resonate: Protect your dream.
