Bulls launch URC campaign with dominant win over Zebre

The Pretoria side entered the contest after finishing second in last season's standings, while Zebre had ended the campaign in 16th place.

However, the hosts made the stronger start, controlling the opening 10 minutes and forcing the Bulls into a series of desperate defensive interventions.

Tommaso Allan opened the scoring with a 13th-minute penalty before Zebre lock Matteo Canali was sent to the sin bin after bringing down a maul near his own try line. The Bulls were awarded a penalty try, although Allan added another three points shortly before the half-hour mark.

The visitors gradually found their rhythm, with Reinhardt Ludwig crashing over following a succession of powerful attacks inside the Zebre 22.

Paul de Wet then intercepted a wide pass two minutes before the interval and sprinted 50 metres to score beneath the posts, giving the Bulls a 21-6 lead at half-time.

The Bulls extended their advantage just three minutes after the restart when Ruan Vermaak was sent through a gap following sustained possession. Harold Vorster then finished off another forceful sequence driven by the forwards.

Zebre captain Alessandro Fusco briefly reduced the deficit with a try, but at 35-13 the outcome was effectively settled. Replacement lock JF van Heerden added another close-range score before scrumhalf Zak Burger crossed in the closing seconds.

The match also featured a notable colour clash, with both sides wearing blue, an issue highlighted amid World Rugby's efforts to improve accessibility for colour-blind spectators.

The victory completed wins for all four South African sides, after the Stormers beat Connacht, the Lions overcame defending champions Leinster and the Sharks defeated Ospreys.
