Tyla Promnick wins SA Title in closely contested war

21-year-old rising talent Tyla Promnick made some history in the process of becoming the South African mini-flyweight champion after defeating Thobela Nyanda via majority decision.

The bout lasted the full ten rounds and in the end, Promnick had her hand raised in a fight that could’ve gone either way. Two of the three judges scored the contest in her favour, and the last judged viewed the fight as a draw.

The first few rounds was a period in which both fighters were visibly nervous and still collecting important data for the latter stages of the fight. After round five, Promnick took the initiative and closed the distance but at times she was caught by Nyanda as she looked to open up and look for the killer blow.

Promnick, under the tutelage of Alan Toweel, has risen to become the youngest female South African Champion and she did so the hard way. In the build up to the fight, the undefeated boxer said that “this has been the toughest training camp I’ve ever been through, they just get more and more challenging, and I’m hoping that the champion will give me a test because I need tough tests at this stage of my career.”
Turns out Promnick was correct on both fronts, she endured the toughest and longest fight of her career after conquering a grueling training camp and now she is in a position to celebrate a major milestone in her career and use it as a foundation to build towards even greater accomplishments.
