Spar Proteas in high spirits ahead of three-day test series against Australia

Spar Proteas captain Khanyisa Chawane says the team is in high spirits ahead of their first test match against Australia at Red Energy Stadium on Saturday.

South Africa will go into this three-day test series looking for redemption coming on the back of losing the Taini Jamison Trophy in their previous tour to New Zealand.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Chawane says the team is excited and ready to face the world champions.

"Quite excited, especially coming from the series that we were at and coming to this new one. Everyone is just excited for the challenge that's coming, so, yeah, the mood is great. We're just looking forward to just getting on court and just continue performing like we've started already," Chawane said.

Chawane says she is impressed that every player in the team wants to leave a mark in this international window, and is willing to put their best foot forward as they prepare for the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

"And each and every player that gets an opportunity here, I love that everyone is just putting up their hand, no one is just getting on court and just doing whatever they want,” the captain added.

“Everyone is really performing and everyone is really putting their foot forward against the best and that's what we want and that's what we need as a team going forward so that when we get to the Commonwealth Games and we get these teams, we are able to really go head on and even come out on the other side."

Chawane also expressed gratitude after becoming the latest national team centurion.

"I am really blessed to be a centurion in South Africa. There's so many players out there who contributed to this game and I think it's only a few that can say they've appeared 100 times for their country. So, it's just something I'm really proud of and I'm really proud to be doing it with this group as you talk about leading such a group."
