Shaun Potgieter clinches SA Heavyweight Title in thriller rematch

Shaun ‘God’s Warrior’ Potgieter reclaimed his SA Heavyweight Title by stopping Chris Thompson in the 7th round of their thrilling rematch at Carnival City on Saturday night.

The two former sparring partners promised a war of attrition, and they delivered precisely that, but this time Potgieter got his revenge in the main event of Boxing 5 Promotion’s ‘Big Guns’ event.

Just before Thompson was sent to the canvas, he made a gesture and threw a glance towards the referee – forgetting about the danger in front of him…
In the build-up, Potgieter (11-3) was adamant he would win the fight, and so it proved to be.
“You can’t lose when it’s God’s time for you to win. I told you when I was here last time, God will put you back together in front of the people who broke you, and he just did that,” said the newly crowned champion straight after the fight.

Their second tussle has already been celebrated as a far more entertaining and skillful fight compared to their first meeting in August 2025, and as anticipated the bout was closely contested, but Potgieter carried more heart and heat in his gloves.
Potgieter lost his title to Thompson in the seventh round last time out, but after doing some good work in the clinch and to the body, the Brakpan bruiser has set up a possible mouthwatering trilogy showdown.
“Of course I’m willing to entertain a trilogy. I never turn down any fight. I’m here to fight, anytime and anywhere.”
