Prominent SA driver Xolile Letlaka unpacks the 24 Hours of Barcelona historic experience

Into Africa racing driver Xolile Letlaka insists he’s honoured to have led the first ever African team to participate at the recent 24 Hours of Barcelona at the Circuit de Barcelona Catalunya.

Team Africa which consisted of four drivers, Letlaka, Axcil Jefferies, Stuart White and Arnold Neveling - led the race within the first 10 hours, however they were faced with a mechanical failure ruling them out in the early stages of the race.

In an exclusive interview with SABC Sport, Letlaka says it has been a dream come true for him as an African to have experienced one of the world’s pinnacle races.

“It was a lovely experience. For any race driver to have the honour and the pleasure and the ability to experience one of those race pinnacles in the world, it is a beautiful achievement. I was not just there for myself but I was representing the African continent -  and we were the first Africa line up. We hope we can inspire the next generation of racing drivers,’’ said Letlaka.

Letlaka admits that they did not finish the race as the car broke down, however says that their aim as African drivers is not only to reach the podium but also inspire the African motorsport fraternity and show that it is possible to compete on global circuits.

“True, we did not finish the race but for us it is not always about the podium but we want to prove that it is possible to break barriers and experience car racing at the highest level. For us flying the South Africa flag was fulfilling. We will go back and become better, and we want to also introduce young drivers,’’ added Letlaka.

With team Africa now back at home, Letlaka says they now shift focus to the second last round of the National Championship of Endurance, under the South African Endurance Series - the 4 Hours of Zwartkops, a two day race taking place from this Friday.

“We come to this race hoping that investment partners can start to see the potential of these kinds of racing championships. We want our kids to aspire to build solid careers within motorsport. We come to Zwartkop this weekend with a mindset of understanding that we all have a responsibility of advancing the sport in South Africa,’’ he expressed.
