Khanyisa Chawane: England series good prep for Comm Games

Spar Netball Proteas captain Khanyisa Chawane says they will use the upcoming Spar Challenge against England as part of their preparations for the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The Proteas will host the Vitality Roses at Ellis Park, Johannesburg in a three-match test series commencing tomorrow and culminating on Sunday, 1 February.

Speaking at the pre-series press conference, Chawane says that they will use this experience to build the needed confidence going to the multinational event scheduled for Glasgow, Scotland, from 23 July to 3 August.

“Playing them [England] now in this series is also part of the preparation we need to do well at The Commonwealth Games and to build the confidence required to perform well at a World Cup,” said Chawane

Both teams are ranked within the world’s top five and have been drawn together in Pool A, alongside Australia, Tonga and Northern Ireland Commonwealth Games. Chawane believes they have nothing to lose and are looking forward to achieving positive results against a top opponent.

“We have nothing to lose. We've got new people in the team, and they have something different to offer. Once they get that opportunity, it’s up to us to support everyone on the court and go for the goals that we’ve set for ourselves in this series.”

The 30-year-old is confident there will be synergy amongst the experience and new players when they take to the court.

Meanwhile, England captain Fran Williams says they are excited to be back for international netball in South Africa after the 2023 Netball World Cup in Cape Town.
