Khanyisa Chawane celebrates Proteas centurion milestone

Spar Proteas captain Khanyisa Chawane has expressed her delight after becoming the latest centurion in national team colours.

The 29-year-old reached her 100th cap on Sunday in South Africa’s final test against New Zealand, having made her debut in 2018.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Chawane said she is grateful for the journey and the support she has received along the way.

“It feels amazing, and I am grateful to be celebrating with such a group. This shows the resilience of South Africans," said Chawane.

"I am really proud of myself but most importantly grateful for the support I have, supporting me towards the 100 caps.”

The Proteas fell short of securing the Taini Jamison Trophy after losing all three matches in the test series, but they pushed the Silver Ferns to the limit in a 57-56 defeat in the final clash.

Chawane said she was proud of how the team responded in that performance.

“I am very proud of the team, just looking at how we started the series and how we performed in the final test," she added.

"I believe every player stepped up and contributed to make sure that we displayed a much improved performance. I am truly proud.”

Attention now turns to the upcoming test series against world champions Australia, starting on 4 October in Bendigo.

“After trying our best to wrap up the series against New Zealand, we just want to continue to deliver. We are hoping for a much improved team performance in the coming series against the world champions.

"We have to compete and win against the best if we want to keep going up,” concluded Chawane.
