Karla Pretorius hopes her netball journey inspires the next generation

Pretorius has called time on her playing career after earning 125 appearances for the Spar Proteas and leading the Free State Crinums to their fifth Telkom Netball League title.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Pretorius says she is fulfilled to have enjoyed a full career and hopes her journey in netball will inspire the next generation of players.

“This wasn’t a decision that I took lightly. After careful consideration, I felt that the time was right for me to step away from the playing court. My heart and mind are at ease and I have peace. I believe that I had a full career and hope to inspire the next generation of players,” said Pretorius.

Pretorius’ illustrious career includes three Netball World Cups and three Commonwealth Games. She was also named Player of the Tournament at the 2019 World Cup in England. Reflecting on some of her career highlights, Pretorius says making her international debut in 2011 and becoming the first South African to play in Australia were among her proudest moments.

“I played my first test for the Spar Proteas in 2011. I also got to experience the World Cup in 2015 for the first time. In 2017, I was the first South African to be contracted to play in the Australian league. And then came 2023, where I played my 100th test at home, in front of the South African crowd and having my family there. I will forever be grateful,” added Pretorius.

The 36-year-old also shared what it meant for her to lead the Free State Crinums to the 2026 Telkom Netball League championship.

“Firstly, having an opportunity to wear the dress again and represent the Free State. This group was really special. I learnt so much from them and hope I have given just as much to them,” she expressed.
